TO ALL MEMBERS OF PEMBROKE ATHLETA

    Dear Friends,

The sudden death of Joe Gerada shocked the whole of the Maltese athletic community but especially all the members of the club where Joe has been given sterling service primarily as the Secretary of the Club Athletics Section practically ever since being elected to the Club Committee.  With a smile or a joke Joe was always present to hear and lend assistance to anybody that approached him.  The field events were his delight and many an athlete found in him a true friend, confidant and expert adviser. A club representative on the Council of the MAAA for these last years, he also served the athletic community by being the Assistant Secretary on the MAAA Council, the Field referee in Track and Field events, many times a Chairperson of the MAAA Disciplinary Board, the inspiration and undisputed leader of the Athletics Officials Committe and Chef de Mission at most of the AASSE's participations in the European Cup Second Division.  Ever present at all organised athletic events at the Marsa Track and in all non-stadia events Joe was a tower of strength.  A true friend.  An indefatigable energy source.  A courageous optimist who had more than his share of anguish, suffering and setbacks.

Thank you Joe.  This is not a Good bye but an Au Revoir.  We will keep you in our memories until the time when we too finish this event to start afresh on a new one, an event that goes on forever and in which you have preceded us as a participant.  Bon voyage Joe.  Please pray for us as we all did when you were among us and will continue to do so that Almighty God may distribute His Blessings on your behalf.

    TILL WE MEET AGAIN

    Victor Camilleri

    President

on behalf of Pembroke Athleta Athletic Section

     PREVIOUS  MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

    Dear athletes and Coaches,

Urban Jungle (Sliema) courtesy of Jose’ and Manuel Borg, has agreed on a renewed sponsorship (and this our club has made our club very happy) with the support and generosity of Time International Co. Ltd. - the sole agents for NIKE Sportswear.  Through this agreement all members receive a discount voucher of 15%.  Furthermore we are obtaining a 25% discount for the sponsored elite athletes on all items (except club official vests and tracksuit) bought from this outlet.

So please take the opportunity to pay a visit to the Urban Jungle (Sliema) which is the sole outlet to take orders for our NIKE CLUB TRACK SUIT and the PANZERI Vest for Competitions.

At this magnificent centre for sportswear and sports goods and casual atire there is a wide range of the latest NIKE sports wear and other brand names worth viewing and buying, including running shoes. Orders will be taken for any of the models to be ordered from abroad.

ALL athletes participating for our Pembroke athletic club MUST wear the official club tracksuit and especially the official vest during competition. This of course gives the club identity and unity. Please do go and order from the above Sliema Urban Jungle outlet (tel. 21334879) at the De Tigne Complex, Tigne Seafront, Sliema.

Please ask for Jose’ Borg  co-Director or Denise, salesperson.

Nursery athletes (cub and kids) need only the t-shirt given out to them for training and competition.

This appeal therefore is meant primarily for the Cadet, Youth, Intermediate, Junior, Senior and Masters.

                                 Pembroke Local Council Athletics School

“What Pembroke Athleta is doing for the children and youth of Pembroke is a credit to

the citizens we represent and the Council fully supports all initiatives of this nature.”

These were the opening words declared by the Mayor of Pembroke Mr Joseph Zammit, when in the presence of Councillor Mr Alfred Mazzitelli, responsible for youth and sport on the Council, he presented a number of implements purchased for the use of the Athletic Section and the Pembroke Local Council Athletics School in particular.  This project, the brainchild of the President of the Athletic Section Mr Victor Camilleri,  found fertile ground amongst the untiring work done by Mr Mazzitelli in this sector and this year 2007 marks the fourth year since its inception.  Led by Head Coach Nursery Group Ms Gwen Fava, the school operates throughout the year and even in the height of summer, a good number of these children keep up attendance.  As the main protagonists, some 20 children were present for the short ceremony that interrupted their fun and play in a special program weaning them towards athletics through the enjoyment of sport.

The basic implements consisting of rubber hoops, adjustable hurdles, small medicine balls, rubber javelins and a colourful segmented ‘parachute’ used for the introduction of collaborative games, among other, ensure that the students of this ‘school’ are guided through a scientific programme conducted by qualified Level 1 IAAF coaches who also underwent academic studies in social studies, psychology, child philosophy and physiotherapy.  In short, the Club ensures that the Pembroke Council in reality obtains value for money in administration of the funding entrusted to their discretion.  In return, the children benefit from the best possible expertise and educational equipment to mould them not only as the future athletes to represent the sport.  This collaboration will also serve the club and hopefully their country in the practice of athletics, above all else fashioning them into respectable law-abiding citizens who will carry the country to the fore in its proper place among peace-loving nations of Europe and this planet.   The results of the Pembroke Athleta athletes on the local and international scene speak volumes for the success of the club.

The Pembroke Local Council Athletics School is open to all children, from the age of six up to eleven years, not necessarily born and residing in Pembroke.  In fact, the School serves children from Swieqi, St Julians, San Gwann and other surrounding towns besides others from as far afield as Mellieha and Birzebbugia.  Anyone interested in joining is welcome to contact the Club President and Coach Mr Victor Camilleri on telephone 21433452 or 99255595, or any of the contact persons whose details a shown in the relevant section of the club web-site athleticspembrokeac.com by clicking on Contact Us.

v     A good number of athletes have been around competing in various events, in European and World standard events. A few have even broken the national record while others did a personal best; still for others it was the first major competition abroad. Everybody did well, not least Pembroke Athleta members.  To mention just one of them, young Andrew Cassar Torreggiani, who set  the new record in the Youths LONG JUMP clearing 6.18m and another leap of 6.53m with a slight wind over the limit allowed denying him another record (he also landed the Gold medal in the FISEC competition in Hungary with these results).

Well done all the athletes and their coaches!   Keep it UP!

v      More news will be announced later on our website about a very big event that we will be participating in, the 100th anniversary of the BOLTON HARRIERS AHLETIC CLUB in about a year from now!

So prepare for it.  Please also see the NEWS section in our website.
